ABOUT DR. CHRISTIAN FURMAN
I was born in Louisville. My parents moved to Oldham County when I was five. I grew up in Crestwood, attended Crestwood Elementary School and then moved to Centerfield Elementary when it was newly built. From Oldham County Middle School, I then graduated from Oldham County High School in 1988. I was honored to be selected as a Governor’s Scholar and attended the University of Kentucky site in 1987.
Growing up in Oldham County, I loved reading, camping with the Girl Scouts, skiing on the Ohio River, fishing with my dad, climbing trees in the front yard, playing the piano, playing the clarinet and marching in the OCHS Marching Band and running track and cross country as an OCHS Colonel. Our family attended Crestwood United Methodist Church (CUMC) and I enjoyed being part of the youth program.
I graduated from college at the University of Miami in 1992, where I also met my future husband, Dean. We were married at CUMC in 1993. Graduating from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1996, I completed my Internal Medicine Residency and my Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the University of Louisville and started as faculty at UofL in 2000.
Dean and I have two adult children, Nathan and Carrie. They graduated from North Oldham High School, with Nathan going on to earn his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Carrie her Masters in Education. When they were little, I coached Carrie’s Upward Basketball Team at St. John United Methodist Church in Prospect while Dean coached Nathan’s team. I also volunteered as a Girl Scout leader for Carrie’s troop.
My parents, Joe and Louisa Davis, live in Crestwood in the house where we were raised. My brothers are Joey Davis and Lee Davis. My mom worked in the insurance business and in the public school system. My dad served in the Army in Vietnam and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves. My brother, Lee, is a metallurgical engineer. He and his wife, Diane, live in Louisville. My brother, Joey, is a Jefferson County Sheriff after retiring from Louisville Metro Police Department, where he headed the K-9 unit. He and his wife, Jenny, live in Louisville. Jenny is a teacher in Jefferson County Public Schools. My parents own a farm in Trimble County. My mother-in-law, Diana Furman, lives in Oldham County and works for Dean’s law firm.
As faculty at UofL, I served as Medical Director at numerous nursing homes in Louisville and, early in my career, as Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care at the Veterans Administration Hospital. I have had numerous leadership roles at UofL and have had the privilege of providing primary care and Geriatric and Palliative Care for many friends, neighbors, previous teachers, and older adults in the community.
In 2022-23, I served as a Congressional Aging and Policy Fellow in Washington, D.C., advising on older adult issues and working on constituent issues. Returning home, I ran for and was elected to the City of Prospect City Council in 2024.
